RAW BAMBOO PRODUCT CARE

Your natural bamboo product is completely raw -- it's free of the harsh chemicals + toxins used by most other products to quickly seal and smooth the surface. Like any untreated wood product, your 'boo will need a lil' TLC to protect and ensure its longest possible life.

The tiny fibers you may notice on your new, raw bamboo product are actually typical prior to the oil seasoning process.

Bamboo is a naturally fibrous, hard grass material. We refuse to use the harmful surface sealants, chemicals or lacquers that most companies do, as we don't want that stuff coming in contact with your food (or ours), either! As such, stray fibers can be a natural characteristic of the raw, untreated 'boo until it's been properly oil seasoned (per directions, below).
 

OIL SEASONING YOUR NEW, RAW BAMBOO

We recommend you care for your new, raw 'boo product using the following tips:

  • Oil up your new 'boo by seasoning it with a healthy oil as soon as it arrives. Oil seasoning is the safest way to create a naturally protective base seal for any raw wood product. It also helps any stray bamboo fibers lay flat.
     
  • Oil your 'boo for 7 straight days with walnut oil (or another healthy, food-grade oil that you would eat). Walnut oil was the traditional method for sealing and protecting wood, used by artisans and craftsman for years before the development of today's harsh industrial chemical sealants. Check out our complementary, easy-to-apply 100% Walnut Oil Spray for your bamboo and other kitchen wood products.  
     
  • DON'T use mineral oil! Please, please, please! Mineral oil is a petroleum byproduct (yuck!) and you don't want that on your food prep surfaces or in your food. 
  • Yes, you can use your new 'boo anytime during the oil seasoning process. Just do your oiling after using/washing.

  • Maintenance oil season your 'boo when it gets dry or rough. This ensures the longest possible lifespan of your product. You only need to maintenance season (when your 'boo gets dry or rough) after the initial oiling period. 

 

MORE CARE TIPS FOR YOUR RAW BAMBOO PRODUCTS

Here are few more longest-life tips:

  • Always stand your 'boo up (on edge) after washing or oiling.
    Whether you've just oiled or washed your 'boo, it's best to let it dry standing on edge. If you've just washed it, the water can run off the sides (rather than soaking in). If you've just oiled it, the oil can be absorbed rather than wiped off. 
  • Don't soak your 'boo... or run it through the dishwasher!
    Never, ever, never run your 'boo through the dishwasher. Trust me on this one. To clean, simply wash with a non-abrasive dishcloth, warm water, and gentle dish soap. Let air dry (standing up).
     
  • Gently "love up" your 'boo with a little oil when it feels dry or rough. 
    When you notice your 'boo feeling dry or rough, it's probably time for a quick TLC oil seasoning. Frequent conditioning will keep the surface seal of your 'boo in tip-top shape and ensure that it doesn't get too dry, which could promote separation of the naturally compressed slats or fibers.
